Turtle Foundation Newsletter July 2018

Dear friends and supporters of Turtle Foundation,
After an organizational break in our newsletter mailing, we are pleased to finally continue to report about our work for the protection of the endangered sea turtles.
First the good news: On Boavista the 2018 nesting season is already in full swing, and we expect a great year! Initially, we expanded our vehicle fleet with a new Toyota Hilux and a FUSO 4x4 drive truck, which were urgently needed to improve our beach camp supply and logistics. During our preparations for the season, our hard-working staff have moved an unusually large amount of material both in Germany and on Boavista due to our project extensions and the start of new development cooperation projects; we will report more in the next issue. Set up of Camp Boa Esperança end of May 2018
This year, our beach camps were set up a couple of weeks earlier than in previous nesting seasons (see also our blog on the season start) in order to better get ahead of poachers. The camps are also ready for our volunteers, some of whom are already patrolling the beaches. At this point we would have a kind request: We still urgently need active support for the summer months: If you know someone who would like to actively support our turtle conservation project and would like to have an unforgettable summer in Cape Verde, please share this message! We look forward to receiving your application on our website form!
Further, we want to announce that we completely reworked our donation page. By integrating modern online payment methods, it is now even easier for you to support Turtle Foundation financially. Please try it out right now using the button below! At the moment, for example, we need funds to continue our already started conservation dog project. The professional training of Karetta and Kelo, who will help us to find turtles and poachers on the nesting beaches, costs time and money. Every donation counts and helps us to continue our important work for protecting endangered sea turtles! Conservation dogs Kelo (left) and Karetta with Swiss dog trainer Marlene Zähner

Now some not so pleasant news: The issue of sea turtle by-catch in fishing has been on our minds for quite some time. A recent conference in Senegal gave us a clearer picture of how dramatic the situation really is. According to conservative estimates, tens of thousands of sea turtles could end up year after year as by-catch on the longline hooks of industrial fisheries – and that with subsidies from the European Union! Please find out more on our new bycatch blog.

Finally, we would like to draw your attention to a great fundraising campaign. If you follow us on Facebook, you might have noticed: Mijke de Waal is a Dutch sea turtle friend who took part in the four-day march of Nijmegen 2018 (Vierdaagse) on 17 June, and dedicated this exhausting 160 km walk to Turtle Foundation. When she arrived at the finish last Friday, with 960 € in donations she had clearly exceeded her target of 750 €! Mijke, Turtle Foundation is extremely grateful for your amazing action! Soon, we will provide a tool on our website that will allow you to follow Mijke's example and run your own fundraising campaign for Turtle Foundation; we will let you know!

Dr. Hiltrud Cordes, TF Program Director Many thanks to all supporters of Turtle Foundation! We wish you a wonderful summer!

With kind regards
