The 2025 nesting season on Boa Vista (Cape Verde) has begun – and our team is ready!

We have already counted over 1300 nests of the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). To coordinate our conservation efforts effectively, we held an intensive training camp before the season started. A total of 14 participants – including our camp leaders and staff from Fundação Tartaruga – were prepared for their responsible roles: coordinating the protection camps where patrols are conducted, data collected, and turtles protected from poachers throughout the season.

The aim of the training camp was to establish a shared understanding of procedures, standards, and challenges. This ensures that all camps operate with consistent quality and methodology.

Hands-on Training for Real-Life Situations

The so-called “Training of Trainers” on Boa Vista combines theory with practical exercises: from simulated patrols to emergency scenarios on the beach. The support of the local fire brigade was particularly valuable, as they provided courses on safety, first aid, and rescue techniques to help prepare our team for any challenges.

Ready for the 2025 Season

Thanks to the successful Training-of-Trainers programme, our team is now fully equipped to protect the island’s nesting beaches. The intensive training was not only enjoyable but also provided valuable knowledge and real added value for the work in the camps. A particularly wonderful outcome: the team has grown even closer during this time.
