Boavista, Cape Verde

Turtle Foundation is seeking highly motivated individuals that would like to participate in our sea turtle conservation project in Boavista, Cape Verde.
We are currently accepting applications for the following positions:
- CONSERVATION INTERNS (minimum 6 weeks)
- CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS (minimum 2 weeks)

I N T E R N S
Turtle Foundation offers the opportunity to students or recent graduates to participate in our projects as Interns. In this position, interns will have added responsibility in all aspects of conservation and research work, and will work closely with the Camp Coordinators.
Interns also have the possibility to develop a project thesis if needed, with the support of our team of biologists in Boavista.
V O L U N T E E R S
Anyone is welcome to apply for the position of a conservation volunteer as long as he/she meets the requirements (described below) .
General duties for participants (Interns/volunteers) in the project are:
Beach Patrols
Patrols are undertaken each night at varying hours and in the early morning. Our beaches range from 3km-5km. The patrols serve several functions and may last between 4-6 hours:
- Search for nesting activity and nesting turtles;
- Helping with tagging post-nesting turtles, carapace measuring and other data collection;
- Search for any evidence of nests hatching;
- Nest excavations and relocations;
- Collect data on nesting turtles and nesting events;
- Maintenance and preparation of equipment.
Beach Clean Ups
These are done regularly and involve schools, communities, local businesses and the hotels on Boavista
Education & Awareness
- Producing and distributing conservation related signs in the beaches (ongoing activity);
- Assisting with organized turtle watches and other events for school/community groups & tourists.
Become involved!
Minimum requirements to participate are:
Available for a minimum of 2 weeks (or 6 weeks for internships);
- Able to converse, receive and understand instructions in English (our working language) or Portuguese or Spanish;
- Be able to withstand extremely difficult and sometimes adverse living and working conditions;
- Minimum age of 18;
- Physically in good condition and good health and enjoy working outdoors;
- Being able to work in remote areas under extremely basic conditions (no sanitation in beach camps).
Benefits/Costs:
Interns must cover their living costs, these are €8 per day if you stay in the camps, or €10 per day if you stay in the community of Fundo das Figueiras. This position requires a minimum stay of 6 weeks.
Volunteers are requested to cover a participation fee of €12 per day during their time in the project.
Airfare, travel/medical insurance and personal expenses are not included in the costs. It is mandatory for all applicants to take out travel and medical insurance for the entire duration of their volunteer stay. On free days participants cover their own expenses.
