This project is about saving approx. 600 female turtles (10% of the nesting population) coming ashore to lay their eggs from being slaughtered extremely brutally during the coming nesting season (June - October). This is not "only" about the protection of an endangered species but also about the protection of and the respect for a living creature.
The project is already under way: the costs have been determined, cooperation agreements are signed with the project partners, including the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture in Cape Verde, the Boavista community council, and the military command, and Turtle Foundation staff is committed.
However, so far the required financing is not secured yet. Should we not be able to collect the necessary funds in time for this year’s nesting season we will have to postpone this project to 2009 and allow the slaughtering for yet another year.
