Blood stained beaches on Cape Verde

In June 2007 the Turtle Foundation received desperate cries for help from turtle conservation minded people in Cape Verde. According to them turtles coming ashore on those islands to lay their eggs were being butchered on the beaches most brutally and in great numbers. The female turtles literally crawl directly into the arms of their butchers who have been waiting for them impatiently. The slaughterers do not even postpone their bloody work until the mother turtle has laid her eggs. Not only is the mother killed, but all her progeny as well.

Following the receipt of these reports Dr. Hiltrud Cordes (member of the board of Turtle Foundation) together with Sigfried Weisel (biologist) travelled to Cape Verde in order to evaluate the situation. They discovered that those terrible reports were in fact true.

Therefore the TURTLE FOUNDATION is planning to set up a beach protection camp on Boavista for the next nesting season. However, the realization of this new project will mainly depend on sufficient funding.
