On December 28, 2009 the Navy of Tanjung Redeb caught a local boat which contained nearly 1'300 turtle eggs.
The egg collectors stated that the eggs were collected illegally on the islands Belambangan and Sambit. These are the remaining two of the five most important sea turtle nesting islands in the Derawan Archipelago that are still unprotected due to lack of funds. The other three nesting islands are fully protected all year round by rangers of the Turtle Foundation.
