Preisträger sind Herr Agus Dermawan und Frau Eny Budi Sri Haryani Siswosusanto vom Meeres- und Fischereiministeriums der Republik Indonesien, die herausragendes Engagement für einen nachhaltigen Riff- und Meeresschutz bewiesen haben.

 

The award was founded by the Berlin Society for Big Aquariums and given to the laureates Mr. Agus Dermawan and Mrs. Eny Budi Sri Haryani Siswosusanto of the Indonesian Marine and Fishery Affairs Ministry for their commendable involvement in sustainable reef protection. 

 

In seiner Laudatio hob der Botschafter die großen Erfolge des indonesischen Fischereiministeriums hervor, das den Schutz der bedrohten Riffe auch durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Regierungs- und Nichtregierungsorganisationen ermöglicht hat. 2009 hat das Ministerium 13,5 Millionen Hektar der indonesischen Gewässer zu Marinen Schutzgebieten erklärt und damit deutlich das durch die indonesische Regierung gesetzte Ziel, 10 Millionen Hektar bis 2010 zu schützen, überschritten. Als nächstes Ziel nannte der Botschafter die Erweiterung der Schutzgebiete auf 20 Millionen Hektar bis zum Jahr 2020.

In his speech the ambassador stressed the outstanding success of the Indonesian Marine and Fishery Affairs Ministry which has made possible the protection of endangered reefs by cooperating with governmental and non-governmental organizations. In 2009 the Ministry declared 13.5 million hectars to become protected areas. With this declaration the objective set up by the Indonesian Government, to protect 10 million hectars by 2010, was obviously exceeded. The enlargement of the protection area to 20 million hectars by 2020 was announced by the ambassador as well.

Die Berliner Gesellschaft für Großaquarien (BGG) plant, den Blue Starfish Award in einem Turnus von zwei Jahren zu vergeben. Die Gesellschaft betreibt seit 2006 den AquaDom, das weltweit größte Zylinderaquarium im DomAquarée Berlin und versteht sich als Teil der internationalen Natur- und Artenschutzbewegung. Sie unterstützt verschiedene Artenschutzprojekte und Naturschutzorganisationen weltweit, darunter die Zoologische Gesellschaft für Arten- und Populationsschutz (ZGAP) und die Turtle-Foundation, die Stiftung zum Schutz der Meeresschildkröten.

The Berlin Society for Big Aquariums intends to give the Blue Starfish Award every second year. Since 2006 the BGG runs the biggest cylindric aquarium worldwide in the Berlin DomAquaree. The BGG has become part of the international nature conservation and population protection movement by supporting various species conservation organizations such as the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP) and the Turtle-Foundation – an organization for the protection of sea turtles.
