Im letzten Jahr (16.09.2006) wurden auf Sangalaki zwei Schildkröten telemetriert; seither werden ihre Wege von Malaysia aus überwacht. Eine der beiden kam in letzter Zeit mehrmals auf Sangalaki an den Strand, während die andere Richtung Brunei gewandert ist.

Der Prozess rund um das im Mai 2007 in Kalimantan gestoppte chinesische Boot mit beinahe 400 toten Meeresschildkröten an Bord ist abgeschlossen. Der Kapitän des Bootes wurde zu 4 Jahren Haft verurteilt. Das Boot samt Ausrüstung wurde beschlagnahmt und die Schildkröten wurden verbrannt. Die Bootsmannschaft wurde schon vor Prozessbeginn frei gelassen. Sie waren nur Handlanger, taten was der Captain ihnen sagte und wussten offenbar nicht, dass Meeresschildkröten geschützt sind.

Am 24. Juli entdeckten unsere Park Ranger auf Sangalaki eine Karettschildkröten bei der Eiablage. Während Grüne Meeresschildköten jedes Jahr mehr als 350'000 Eier auf Sangalaki legen, tun das Karettschildkröten nur ganz selten. Die Eier (170) wurden in die Hatchery verlegt und am 13. September schlüpfte 90% (153) des Geleges.

Zerfetzte Meeresschildkröten sind die Folge von der in Indonesien zwar verbotenen aber leider immer noch häufig betriebenen Bombenfischerei. Am 9. und 29. September wurde vor Sangalaki jeweils eine tote subadulte Schildkröte gefunden (40 cm lang + 36 cm breit / 30 cm lang + 25 cm breit). Beide wurden wahrscheinlich durch Unterwasserbomben getötet.
